Divergent thinking

Convergent thinking is a term coined by Joy Paul Guilford as the opposite of divergent thinking. It generally means the ability to give the "correct" answer to standard questions that do not require significant creativity, for instance in most tasks in school and on standardized multiple-choice tests for intelligence. Convergent thinking is the type of thinking that focuses on coming up with the single, well-established answer to a problem. Convergent thinking emphasizes speed, accuracy, and logic and focuses on recognizing the familiar, reapplying techniques, and accumulating stored information. In this view, answers are either right or wrong. The solution that is derived at the end of the convergent thinking process is the best possible answer the majority of the time. Convergent thinking is also linked to knowledge as it involves manipulating existing knowledge by means of standard procedures.

Using their notes and textbooks for reference, they can determine the functions needed to solve the problem. To enable convergent thinking, present potential answers in a multiple-choice style fashion. Was it [author], [author] or [author]?

They are completely in contrast with each other yet extremely important in our daily lives. For instance, in a standardized aptitude test, a convergent thinker might be able to decide the right answer, but the contemplating mind of a divergent thinker might work against him in the situation. In theory, convergent and divergent thinking are two completely different aspects of thinking. However, they hold more in common than one might realize. Although they are completely different in terms of the basic meaning of the terms and how they work, the major purpose is the same. Both these thinking processes are implemented in order to explore creativity and find solutions to different problems.
