Sustainable urban transport systems require alternatives to the use of private cars that are competitive in terms of convenience and flexibility as well as cost. Mass transit systems are the central component but extension of heavy rail and metro systems is costly and these can never reach every part of the city.
Vukan R. Vuchic Follow. This is the only current and in print book covering the full field of transit systems and technology. Beginning with a history of transit and its role in urban development, the book proceeds to define relevant terms and concepts, and then present detailed coverage of all urban transit modes and the most efficient system designs for each. Including coverage of such integral subjects as travel time, vehicle propulsion, system integration, fully supported with equations and analytical methods, this book is the primary resource for students of transit as well as those professionals who design and operate these key pieces of urban infrastructure. For each stage, large quantities of related literature have been introduced from different perspectives. The aim of this research is to document the main smart urban transit models, topics and implementations for future references and research in each stage. The methodologies for solving those models were proposed and the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing have been mostly used, which will be helpful for filling the gaps for further research. Despite of the model updates, this study also summarized the application trends such as integrated network design in strategic planning, synchronization and timetable recovery from disruption in tactical and operational planning. To improve the transit system and service, evaluation models on service reliability, service accessibility, timetable robustness, and energy consuming are proposed, which highlight the gap between the idealized service and the real service. Transportation influences the form of cities and their livability, their economic, social, and environmental characteristics. The increasing transportation demand creates more and more mobility-related problems.
Urban public transport services generally run at a large deficit. This has led public authorities to seek efficiencies, notably through private sector involvement. Private entry is complicated by the essential network characteristics of public transport, with parts of the network potentially profitable and others perennially unprofitable. Support for the sector traditionally seeks to provide basic mobility services to all segments of society, including low-income users. Intervention is also required to manage the natural tendency towards concentration and market power in the provision of these transport services. Policy towards urban public transport is increasingly aimed at managing congestion on the roads and mitigating CO2 emissions by substituting for travel by car.
Public transport also known as public transportation , public transit , mass transit , or simply transit is a system of transport , in contrast to private transport , for passengers by group travel systems available for use by the general public, typically managed on a schedule, operated on established routes, and that charge a posted fee for each trip. Public transport between cities is dominated by airlines , coaches , and intercity rail. High-speed rail networks are being developed in many parts of the world. However, most public transport trips include other modes of travel, such as passengers walking or catching bus services to access train stations. Paratransit is sometimes used in areas of low demand and for people who need a door-to-door service.
